CHRISTIAN CANDIDATE CALLS FOR EXECUTION OF GAYS

Toronto, ON October 3, 2008 -- Sudbury Independent Candidate, David Popescu, said in a recent candidate’s debate that homosexuals should be executed. Asked in a telephone interview later Popescu said “A young man asked me what I think of homosexual marriages and I said I think homosexuals should be executed," according to The Sudbury Star.

The Humanist Association of Canada (HAC), along with all decent law-abiding citizens are calling for Mr. Popescu’s resignation from the election and that hate crime charges be leveled against him.

Founded in 1968, the Humanist Association of Canada is a national, not-for-profit charitable organization that promotes ethics, rationality, critical thinking, dignity, and equality.

HAC president and spokesperson, Pat O’Brien says “It is one thing to promote so-called Christian values, but the calling for the execution of people simply for being honest about themselves shows the lowest from of intolerance”.

In 2003, Popescu was found guilty of assaulting his mother and his sentence included three years of probation. Apparently Mr. Popescu’s Christian morality does not extend to his own behavior. Religion cannot trump the law of the land and Mr. Popescu cannot be allowed to continue to advocate illegal activities.
